The adoption of the third Directive on postal services will soon lead to full liberalisation across Europe's postal markets. The resulting competition will put considerable pressure on the universal service providers to cut costs even further.

Besides, owing to regulatory and other requirements they have to continue maintaining their nationwide retail outlet networks. If the »postal services« brand and image is to remain strong, providers need to keep serving all target groups. To account for changes in customer behaviour, universal service providers have restructured their retail outlet offerings. Services have been aligned with the needs of private consumers and small office/ home office customers. Bridging the gap between maintaining revenue and minimising costs remains diffi cult. New outlet formats, innovative outsourcing models and selfservice machines for pick-up and delivery are just some of the new approaches that are being trialled.

The 7th Petersberg Conference will focus on the future of postal retail outlets and present a number of innovative success stories from outlet networks around the world.
